South African Legislation

Every employer has a legal duty to provide a safe working environment.

The primary legislation governing workplace safety is:

Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993

The Occupational Health and Safety Act places a duty on employers to:

• Provide and maintain a workplace that is safe and without risk to health.

• Identify workplace hazards.

• Assess and manage risks.

• Provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision.

• Ensure employees follow safe work procedures.

SANS Standards

The South African National Standards (SANS) provide detailed technical requirements for the safe storage, handling, installation and use of LP Gas.

Depending on your workplace, applicable standards may include:

• SANS 10087 (Part 1 & Part 3)

• Other relevant LPG standards applicable to your operations
